The Method: How Luxury Items Are Actually Cleaned

Most damage to luxury footwear does not happen while it is being worn. It happens during a well-meant attempt to clean it — too much water, too much heat, or a product designed for a material the item is not made of.
There is no single luxury cleaning method. There are materials, and each one sets its own rules.
It starts with identification
Before anything is applied, the item is examined: material type, finish, dye stability, stitching, adhesives and any previous repairs. A painted midsole, a coated leather and a natural full-grain leather can look identical under shop lighting and behave nothing alike once they are wet.
Material by material
Smooth leather — cleaned with minimal moisture, then reconditioned. Leather that is cleaned but not fed will dry out and crack along the flex lines.
Suede and nubuck — worked dry wherever possible. The nap is lifted mechanically before any liquid is considered; soaking flattens the fibres and changes the colour permanently.
Canvas and textile — tolerant of water, intolerant of aggressive agents and of drying too fast near a radiator, which sets stains and warps the shape.
Mesh and knit — cleaned with soft brushes and low pressure. The structure is fragile and shows every over-scrubbed patch.
Hardware and trims — masked and treated separately, never left to sit in a cleaning solution.
Three things to avoid at home
The washing machine. Heat, agitation and prolonged soaking break down the adhesives that hold a shoe together.
Household detergents and bleach. They are formulated for fabric, not for dyed leather, and they strip more than dirt.
Direct heat while drying. Radiators and hairdryers shrink leather and lock stains into the fibre.
Finishing and protection
A clean item is only halfway there. Leather is reconditioned, suede is re-napped, and the surface is protected so the next rain shower does not undo the work.
